Oguzs and Oguz Turkish is a very important and interesting study area for Turkish philology and historical researchers. Many Turkish and foreign researchers published articles, books and papers on this subject both in history and philology. Especially the origin of the name Oguz is a subject which has been emphasized by both Turkish and foreign researchers, and there is not an allied view on this day.
In this study, we will first mention the origins of Oguzs and the states in which they were founded and we will mention the origins of the name Oguz, the use of them in historical texts and the meaning of this name in the Republican period.
The method used in our study is an diachronic and synchronic method. In our article, the texts written by the name Oguz will be scanned from our first written sources and then the usage and meanings of the name Oguz in today’s Anatolian dialects will be compared and the historical course of the name of Oguz will be revealed in terms of meaning.
The Oguz Turks, who existed in very distant geographies among the Turkish communities, first lived in the Mongolian territory as subject to the Kök Türk and Uygur states. Later on, it is known that the Oguz people lived in the vicinity of Seyhun (Sirderya) and Aral Lake.
The exit of the Oguzs as an important state to the history scene was with Seljuk Bey’s Great Seljuk State. The Great Seljuk State, which dominated a vast region from East Turkestan to the south of the Caucasus, from Syria to Marmara, was destroyed in 1157 due to internal and external factors. After the end of this troubled end, many states and atabeyliks were established by the Turkmen in the region where the Great Seljuk State was dominant. One of these states is the Anatolian Seljuk State. However, this state was destroyed in 1308 by not being able to take the Mongol pressure anymore. After the collapse of the Anatolian Seljuk State in the history of the three continents of 600 years-long sovereignty, which will last for a long time, the Ottoman Principality to grow and development of the Ottoman Supreme State came to the stage of history.Ottoman Supreme State, replaced again with another Turkmen-Oguz state but have left the Republic of Turkey, some institutions of the organizational structure and the founding date actually is always to refer to a previous Oguz-Turkmen state of the Ottoman Supreme State. This proves to us that the state tradition in the Turks is continuous and that the memory of the state is the memory of the nation.
Some of the scientists of the bull with the arrow and some scientists associated with the origin of the name of Oguz private name on a union could not be provided. With the bull of some scientists, some scholars have not been able to provide a union over the origin of the Oguz special name that they accept regarding the arrow.
In this study, which we got the meaning of the name Oguz in the Anatolian dialects, it is appropriate to express our opinion here after giving the opinions of precious scientists about the origin of the name Oguz. In our opinion, it is hardly reasonable to find only one Oguz in Turkish. It seems reasonable to think that Oguz, in terms of clan, consists of a combination of the words “ok” and “uz”. However, it does not seem reasonable to explain the name of the legendary Turkic khan with the combination of “ok” and “uz”.At this point, Ahmet Bican Ercilasun’s explanation is the most rational.
As it is known, after the establishment of the Republican and Turkish Language Society, not only the old-letter manuscripts were scanned, but also the assembly activities were started. Thanks to these compilation activities, many Turkish words, meanings and places of use that have been living in the Anatolian dialects have been forgotten. When we look at the compilation studies regionally, it is very important that the name of Oguz is kept in use and it carries importance in the region of Kayseri from Rize, Gumushane to Erzurum and Erzincan. The fact that the name of Oguz continues to be used in dialects in relation to its appearance and behavior, rather than “ok” and “uz” tribe name, shows that it has been used for centuries by people living in distant settlements.
The result of this study, which we studied the old name and the meaning of Oguz until today’s Anatolian dialects, is that Oguz is a private name not forgotten in the historical process, but actually comes from the word ox as seen in the name of the legendary Turk Kagan Oguz Khan.
