OPINIONS OF THE TEACHER CANDIDATES RELATED TO USE OF AUGMENTED REALITY TECHNOLOGY FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to determine the opinions of the teacher candidates who are receiving education in the pedagogical formation programme related to the use of augmented reality technology for educational purposes. Qualitative research method was used in the research. The research group includes a total of 20 teacher candidates who have taken Instructional Technology and Material Design course and selected among the students who are receiving education at Siirt University, Faculty of Education, Pedagogical Formation programme during 2017-2018 academic year. Research data have been acquired through a semi-structured interview form. Descriptive analysis method was used to analyse the research data. Opinions of the teacher candidates who participated in the study were examined in 3 different categories related to augmented reality practices. First of all, teacher candidates expressed their idea that the use of augmented reality in the classroom attracts attention, provides permanent learning and increases motivation. When it comes to associating with life, teacher candidates stated that augmented reality will facilitate the life and associations with real life. They suggested that the use of augmented reality as an educational tool will be beneficial in education, provide permanent learning, increase interest towards the courses and attract attention. Findings of the research indicate that teacher candidates who participated in the research have positive opinions regarding the implementation of augmented reality practices in classroom environments. It has been suggested that the augmented reality applications will provide entertaining and remarkable learning environment for students, facilitate learning, increase the participation in the course as it addresses the cognitive, affective and psycho-motor learning processes. It has been stated that an effective environment can be created, learning can be turned into a more interactive structure and success can be increased in this way. It has been also observed that augmented reality applications can also be used in different areas such as health, games and entertainment besides education.
