IBU Teaching and Learning Center Organized Training for Professional Development of IBU Balkan Language School Instructors

On January 29th and 30th, 2025, the IBU Teaching and Learning Center successfully organized a professional development training session tailored for instructors from the IBU Balkan Language School. The training aimed to enhance the pedagogical skills of English as a Foreign Language instructors by focusing on effective strategies to foster learner autonomy and improve classroom questioning techniques.  
 
The event featured two expert-led sessions designed to provide both theoretical insights and practical applications in language teaching. The first session, “Prompting Autonomous Learning in the EFL Classroom: the Why and How?”, was conducted by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Igbale M. Fetishi from the English Language Teaching Department. This interactive workshop explored the principles and importance of autonomous learning in language acquisition, equipping instructors with strategies to encourage self-directed learning among students.  
 
The second session, “How to Check Meaning—An Introduction to CCQs”, was led by Prof. Dr. Ana Kecan from the English Language Teaching Department. The session focused on the use of Concept Checking Questions as a key method for assessing students' understanding of new vocabulary, grammar, and concepts in the EFL classroom. Through hands-on activities, participants learned how to craft effective CCQs to enhance student comprehension and engagement.  
 
Throughout the two-day event, instructors had the opportunity to collaborate, share experiences, and discuss best practices for creating a more interactive and student-centered learning environment. The training aligns with IBU’s ongoing commitment to faculty development and its mission to promote excellence in language education.  
 
The IBU Teaching and Learning Center continues to organize regular workshops, training sessions, and professional development programs to support instructors in implementing innovative teaching methodologies.
