Asst. Prof. Dr. Marija Miloshevska Janakieska, a professor in the Department of Architecture at International Balkan University (IBU), shares her Erasmus+ Staff Mobility for Teaching experience in Slovenia.
Why Slovenia – As an advocate for sustainability, I was thrilled to participate in the Going Green Design Week at the Faculty of Design in Ljubljana. Their dedication to sustainability aligned perfectly with my professional focus, making it an ideal collaboration. The Faculty of Design is also a proud member of the World Design Organization, just like our university, which strengthened our connection. Slovenia, known as one of the greenest countries in Europe, offered a great opportunity to learn from experts in sustainable design and experience its impressive sustainable practices firsthand.
Why Mobility Matters – I’ve always seen Erasmus+ Staff Mobility for Teaching as an invaluable opportunity for professional growth, networking, and promoting European values. Going on mobility allowed me to engage with colleagues and students from diverse cultural backgrounds. It not only expanded my professional knowledge but also encouraged mutual understanding and cultural appreciation. It helped me adapt to new environments, feel more open and freer, and bring those positive feelings back to my students and colleagues.
What I Learned – My time in Slovenia reinforced the essential link between sustainability and design, particularly how sustainability can be integrated into urban spaces to make them more environmentally friendly and socially inclusive. From connecting with experts to witnessing Slovenia’s commitment to environmental preservation – like the stunning Lake Bled – this experience deepened my understanding of how sustainability intersects with social equity and urban planning. I’m excited to bring these insights into my teaching and practice.
“We all benefit when our spaces are environmentally conscious and inclusive of the diverse needs of all community members.“
