Guests Discover North Macedonia’s Cultural Heritage During the 8th International Staff Week

In addition to academic and professional activities, the 8th International Staff Week at International Balkan University featured a well-organized cultural program prepared by the International Relations Office (IRO). This program gave participants the chance to experience the history, culture, and natural beauty of North Macedonia.

The program began with a cultural tour of Skopje. Participants visited important historical and architectural landmarks, starting from the Old Bazaar where they had the opportunity to try boza, a traditional local drink, and ending in front of the Museum of Skopje, passing through the Stone Bridge, the landmark that connects the city and represents IBU.

The group then visited Matka Canyon, one of the country’s most popular natural attractions. They took a boat tour to Cave Vrelo, known for its large stalactites and underground lake, which is believed to be one of the deepest underground caves in Europe. The visit was followed by a group lunch and coffee in the peaceful surroundings of the canyon.

The cultural program concluded with a full-day excursion to the historic city of Ohrid, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Participants toured the Old Town, observed the traditional process of making handmade Ohrid paper, and visited several of the city’s 365 historic churches such as St. Kliment, St. Jovan Kaneo, and St. Sofija. Guests also had the chance to learn the closely guarded technique behind authentic Ohrid pearl crafting.

These experiences offered not only a deeper understanding of the culture but also opportunities for informal networking, helped participants feel more connected to the host country, and strengthened the bonds between partner institutions through shared cultural appreciation.
