Aleksandra Ilieska’s story is a shining example of academic dedication, curiosity, and the pursuit of knowledge. A proud alumna of International Balkan University (IBU), Aleksandra now serves as an assistant at IBU’s Faculty of Law, where she contributes to the academic growth of future leaders in the fields of political science and law. In a recent interview, she shared her journey, from her early years in Prilep to her current academic career at IBU.
“I chose Political Science and International Politics because I’ve always been curious about the cause-and-effect relationships in the world. From the smallest issues to the largest global challenges, I wanted to understand how things work,” Aleksandra explains. Growing up in Prilep, a city steeped in patriotism, she was naturally drawn to a deeper understanding of her country’s rich history and its place in the world. This curiosity led her to pursue an academic path that aligned with her interests in global politics, ideologies, and the philosophical foundations that drive them.
When asked why she chose IBU for both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees, Aleksandra reveals that it was the international aspect of the university that initially piqued her interest. “The opportunity to interact with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds was a major factor in my decision,” she says. “Additionally, IBU’s exceptional academic staff played a big role. I knew I would be learning from some of the best in the field.”
Reflecting on her time as a student, Aleksandra fondly recalls the lifelong friendships she formed and the invaluable mentorship she received. “The mentorship I received during my diploma project and Master’s dissertation was crucial in shaping my academic path,” she adds. However, like many students, she faced challenges along the way. “The countless sleepless nights were definitely a hurdle,” she admits, laughing. “But I think every student can relate to that.”
After completing her studies, Aleksandra’s journey took an exciting turn when she transitioned from student to faculty assistant at IBU. “The transition has been surreal but incredibly rewarding,” she shares. “I feel so fortunate to be surrounded by brilliant minds and actively contribute to the academic environment at IBU.” Being able to start her academic career at her alma mater, where her journey began, is something Aleksandra deeply appreciates. “I’m so grateful to IBU for offering me the opportunity to return as part of the team.”
Looking ahead, Aleksandra is focused on advancing her academic career and contributing to the broader fields of political science and law. “There are no real boundaries in these fields; there is always more to explore and contribute,” she reflects. Yet, she remains grounded by the wise words of John Lennon: “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.”
Aleksandra Ilieska’s journey is far from over, and her aspirations for the future are as bright as her academic achievements. As a dedicated member of the IBU community, she continues to inspire students and fellow faculty members alike with her passion for learning, teaching, and exploring the world of political science and law.
