A group of faculty members and students from International Balkan University’s Faculty of Education recently visited the Dimitar Vlahov School for Visually Impaired Children and Youth in Skopje.
The delegation included Assoc. Prof. Dr. Katerina Mitevska Petrusheva and Asst. Sonaj Bilal from the Department of Psychological Counseling and Guidance, Asst. Prof. Dr. Marija Stevkovska from the Department of English Language Teaching, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Refide Sain from the Department of Turkish Language Teaching, along with students from these departments and the Visual Arts Department.
The group was warmly welcomed by the special educator and typhologist Anita Chekanovska Dimitrievska, who introduced the school’s educational program and shared valuable insights into the methods and techniques used in teaching visually impaired students. The presentation included detailed information on the didactic materials, specialized equipment, and adaptive teaching strategies that support inclusive learning.
During the visit, participants had the opportunity to tour the school facilities, including both the primary and high school buildings, classrooms, laboratories, and other learning spaces. The visit was informative and eye-opening, providing students and staff with new knowledge and perspectives on inclusive education.
The group also met with the school’s physical education teacher, who explained the unique ways in which PE is adapted for students with visual impairments—highlighting the use of auditory-based games and balls that produce sound, designed to ensure active participation and enjoyment.
Students expressed their enthusiasm and satisfaction with the visit, finding it to be both educational and inspiring. We extend our sincere thanks to the school staff for their warm hospitality and willingness to share their expertise.
The visit also opened the door for future collaboration, including joint workshops, internship opportunities, and continued support for inclusive practices in education.
