The success story of the International Balkan University began in 2006. The Foundation for Education and Culture “USKUP” was founded by a group of intellectuals and academicians (scholars) to establish the INTERNATIONAL BALKAN UNIVERSITY as a cultural bridge between the Balkans and Turkey, with the intent of increasing the quality level of human capital in the region.
As a provider of high-quality education, International Balkan University has adopted the mission of educating self-confident, multidimensional, socially responsible and globally competitive individuals. In addition, the university produces high-quality scientific research that will contribute to technological and economic development in the region. Miroslav Nastev is a research scientist with the Geological Survey of Canada, Natural Resources Canada. He holds BSc and MSc in Civil Engineering and a Ph.D. degree in Engineering Geology. Dr. Nastev’s scientific, engineering and teaching experience extends over a unique spectrum of competencies related to earthquake engineering, geotechnics, hydrology, hydrogeology, environmental evaluations, and software development. Dr.Nastev is an adjunct professor at Institut national de la Recherche Scientifique INRS-ETE (Quebec City, Canada), Université Laval (Quebec City, Canada), Université du Québec UQA-Chicoutimi (Ville de Saguenay, Canada), University of Western Ontario (London, Canada) and Institute of Earthquake Engineering (Skopje, Macedonia). He has coauthored 55 peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals, more than 180 conference proceedings, 4 book chapters, and numerous technical reports.
He teaches a graduate course “Natural hazard risk assessments” and has supervised and examined 37 MSc and Ph.D. students. His present interests focus on the development of standardized methods and tools for quantitative analysis of physical vulnerability and social and economic losses from natural disasters.
He is a member of a multidisciplinary international team that studies negative impacts from natural hazards and was the lead proponent in collaboration with the US DHS-FEMA on the implementation of the multi-hazard HAZUS software. Dr. Nastev works closely with other federal departments including Defence Canada and Public Safety Canada together with academia on the development and application of advanced interactive risk analysis concepts. His Rapid Risk web-application supports the federal government efforts in increasing the safety and security of Canadians.
