We proudly marked Human Rights Day with a special panel organized by the IBU Legal Clinic, bringing together distinguished experts, scholars, and members of the academic community for an in-depth discussion on freedom of expression and its contemporary challenges.
The event was opened by our Vice Rector, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ebru Ibish, who emphasized the fundamental importance of constitutional and international human rights, as well as the vital role that legal clinics play in promoting, practicing, and safeguarding these principles within society.
The panel was moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Natalija Shikova, Head of the IBU Legal Clinic, who introduced key questions on the responsibilities that accompany freedom of expression, its evolving relevance in the digital era, and the growing need for media literacy. She also highlighted how gender inequalities shape the experiences of women and girls online, and how abuses of free speech challenge journalism’s mission to uphold human rights, integrity, and public trust.
Our invited speakers contributed valuable insights from diverse professional perspectives:
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Marina Tuneva discussed freedom of expression in the media, emphasizing ethical standards and the necessity of media self-regulation to safeguard this right.
Prof. Dr. Sead Dzigal explored the changing landscape of freedom of speech in the digital era and the deep interconnection between media and democratic communication.
Ms. Biljana Nastovska addressed the importance of examining freedom of expression through a gender-sensitive lens, particularly in the context of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign.
As we commemorate Human Rights Day, we reaffirm our institutional commitment to advancing dialogue, education, and action toward a more just, equal, and free society. The IBU Legal Clinic will continue to foster platforms that encourage critical reflection and strengthen human rights protection within our community and beyond.
