We proudly hosted the International Conference on Sustainability and Education (ICSEDU 2026) at International Balkan University on May 21, 2026, bringing together academics, researchers, educators, students, and professionals from across the region and beyond to engage in meaningful discussions on one of the most important topics shaping the future of education. Organized by our Faculty of Education in cooperation with our valued partner, Necmettin Erbakan University from Konya, Türkiye, the conference served as a dynamic platform for the exchange of knowledge, innovative ideas, and best practices related to sustainability and its growing role within educational systems. Through this international gathering, we further strengthened our commitment to academic excellence, international collaboration, and addressing global challenges through education.
The conference officially opened with welcoming remarks delivered by our Rector, Prof. Dr. Lütfi Sunar, and the Dean of the Faculty of Education, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Igballe Miftari-Fetishi, who emphasized the importance of fostering sustainable thinking within educational environments and preparing future generations to contribute positively to society. The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Dr. Maja Muhic from South East European University, who offered valuable perspectives on the human dimension of sustainability in education in the era of artificial intelligence. Participants also benefited from the insights of Ms. Ana Karanfilova-Maznevska from the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning, who presented ongoing sustainability initiatives and highlighted the importance of cooperation between educational institutions and public organizations. The opening ceremony concluded with inspiring presentations of ECO projects prepared by high-school students, demonstrating the growing awareness and engagement of young people in sustainability-related issues.
With the participation of around 50 attendees from Poland, Romania, Türkiye, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Serbia, Kosovo, and North Macedonia, the conference provided a rich international environment for dialogue, research exchange, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Throughout the event, participants explored diverse topics related to sustainability in education, reflecting a shared commitment to creating more responsible, inclusive, and future-oriented learning environments. As International Balkan University, we remain dedicated to supporting academic initiatives that promote innovation, internationalization, and sustainable development, and we look forward to expanding such collaborations that contribute to positive educational and societal impact.
